Ever Heard of 'Silver Surfers?'

greyhair.jpgAn article in the Times features an exhibit by photographer, Vicki Topaz, of magnificent silver-haired women. Women who also have something to say about their gray.

I go back and forth on the issue. I love my natural-born color and would be sorry to see it go. But going it is and I've artfully hidden the gray strand by strand. But it's a pain in the neck. It's time-consuming. And it reminds me of my grandmother, who died an improbable shade of blonde in her 90's.

So, ladies, what's your stand on silver? Men, let's hear your take, too.

Some people look great in silver hair, such as the woman in the photo here.If my hair were to ahve this color I'd leave it that way. But it is a mousy brown now with strands of grey running through it. It looks drab and sad. So I color it the same light brown it has always been with blond streaks. It works for me.

I think the model's hair is stunning, but unfortunately mine doesn't come close to resembling that, so I've gone lighter and longer and am happy with mine.

Awhile back I liked the look of the white hair at my temples. I grew it all out, but then I didn't like it.

Recently, the darker roots were growing out on my bleached blonde hair. I decided to color it light brown. I used a high lift brown. That turned the blonde to silver, the dark roots to brassy light brown. People LOVED the silver, not noticing the lighter area. But how to do it regularly on purpose? Two possibilities: just grow it out; get a hairdresser to take out all color, then color it silver.

I'm growing it out again. Now that there is more silver everywhere, I may like it. Not even going to bother with an intermediate step at this point. Just letting it grow. If I again don't like it, I'll let a hairdresser remove all color and then color it silver, or maybe do it as highlights.

This last year I had a friend diagnosed with a secondary cancer, and the only treatment was another round of chemo and radiation. She chose to shave her head instead of wait for it to fall out.

As a way of showing her support I decided to stop coloring my hair. It's the color I've always hid from (mousy) and now add grey patches @~ 40% grey coverage.....

To my surprise I am actually liking it and have found freedom in excepting me for what I am. Do I miss my old color, sometimes, but I miss my friend more who just passed last weekend. My grey reminds me of her, and it remindes me to love more.

I stay far away from hair dye. At 54 my hair is 90% white (not really gray) in the front and maybe 40% in the back. I'm shooting for the beautiful all-white hair that my 80-year-old mother is sporting these days. I'd be happy if the "graying" picked up the pace.
