Baby Boomer Parents-- Back When We Were Cool
I came across a lovely website today--one that celebrates youth and hope and joy and no...it's not about the next generation or the next-next generation. The site, My Parents Were Awesome, consists entirely of photographs of couples when they were young...submitted by their children. There's something moving and full-circle about seeing a parent as a discrete human being..with a life before kids and all the other grown-up things. Or....as the country song says, "Mama..before she was Mama.'
There will be photos that seem familiar to all of us--- from the 50's (and before) through what look like the 80's. But unlike sites that celebrate the snarky, the derisive and often bizarre, like Awkward Family Photos, My Parents is a tribute, not only to our own youthful awesomeness, but to the fact that our kids see it that way too. One quibble: what's with the My Parents Were Awesome?

One of the things I loved to do when I was a kid was hula hooping. I bought one of the new hoops and have started back to "hooping". It is a lot of fun and really surprises the grandkids when they watch. It is a great workout, too. If you decide to get one, don't make the same mistake I did and hoop for too long when you first start out. I was so sore I could barely bend over for a couple of days!

The "My Parents Were Awesome" thing was actually made into a special piece in the Indianapolis Museum of Art. It was called "Memory Cloud," and it had a bunch of these pictures in little viewers hanging from the ceiling. It was a really cool presentation.

One of the remarkable things about photographs - the "natural", as against publicity - is that they only become truly interesting, or moving, some decades after the photograph has been taken.
