A Touch of Gray
Friday, March 24, 2006

witch.jpg This comes up in our house now and then. To go gray or stay a youthful red? Even if the youthful red is being chemically enhanced. On the one hand, I think of my grandmother who was a vibrant blondish-gold well into her 90's. Did anyone really believe that was her natural color? On the other hand, do I want to look like my husband is dating his elderly great-aunt? Is it about vanity or marketability? And if it's marketability, are we all warily looking at the double standard? Gray-haired men are 'distinguished.' Gray-haired women are old. Follow the debate in this article on Time.com.

i have been grey since i was 25. now that i am 56 i have grown into it. i love grey hair, its long and white and thick and beautiful. of course everyone should do what makes them happy. when i was in europe i noticed that many older women do NOT colour their hair, its pulled into a delicious braid and knotted , and the women all looked so elegant. i dont want to put chemicals on my head, my sister did that for years and now her hair is thin and brittle. again, people should do what makes them happy, however.

I will turn 59 this year. I no longer work so I have plenty of time to think on things. Graying, I like natural healthy hair, natural healthy women in general. I dread the thought of touching a woman's hair and have it break like angel sugar candy.
We are who we are and we should look like who we are. I like to look at a real human body when I first awake, no matter what it looks like. It may be a bit abused or not but it is real and not layered with junk. Women are all beautiful. But each man, each woman has to remember what we like and how pretty it was to look at innocence through innocence and before we were taught to judge.

I recently read a book on this subject; Going Gray by Anne Kreamer. Most of her friends agreed that the author looked better when her hair was naturally gray. I'm nearly sixty and trying to go gray (I'm old enough) but don't really have that much of it yet. My mother had about five gray hairs when she died at age seventy. I'd really like to have pure white hair like my paternal uncles did, but my hair is taking its time.
