The following rant chronicles my descent into the bowels of Verizon hell.

My cell phone contract was about to expire and Verizon offers a "credit" on a new phone if you re-sign for another two years. Being fairly technologically savvy, I did my research on new phones, and decided on the Motorola RAZR - mainly because it had Bluetooth that would allow me to wirelessly transfer contacts, calendars and files from PC to phone.

The signup was effortless and in less than an hour I had a spanking new RAZR complete with Bluetooth headset. Even pairing the phone and PC was easy - but there was a problem. No matter what I did, I simply could not transfer files to or from the phone.

I'm not one to give up on something like this so I went online to see if I could find a solution. Lo and behold there are volumes of data explaining that the Verizon version of the RAZR has object exchange (OBEX) disabled.

Yes, there is an alternative - send the picture to any email address directly from the phone - at $.25/each + airtime. Suddenly it all makes sense. Verizon through manipulation of the phone software, is denying me access to standard phone features and forcing me to pony up every time I send a file.

OK, shame on me for not knowing this beforehand - but I don't have an alternative. Verizon is the only carrier in my area with a signal.

Just for fun, I decided to return to the Verizon store and see if there was some alternative - perhaps this was all some big mistake and in the interim had decided to turn OBEX back on. Here's the chronology of my Verizon adventure.

LIE #1
At the store, they have a "tech support" window, so I bellied up like I didn't know what was going on and explained that my phone was broken and wouldn't transfer files.

The "tech support person" explained that it was something Motorola had done as a security measure to keep nefarious Bluetooth hackers from accessing the contacts and files on my phone. When I revealed that all other wireless carriers who offer the RAZR allow OBEX, he continued to insist that it was a Motorola problem and there was nothing he could do about it.

LIE #2
Not satisfied with the tech guy's bold-faced blame shuffling, I decided to see what the phone support people had to say. After reaching a Bluetooh tech support person at Verizon, I was told that, yes, there may be a way to transfer files from my RAZR, but it was not something that Verizon tech support could not do. Would I like to talk to Motorola about it?

My hopes soaring, I was transferred to Motorola. The next sound you hear is that of Verizon hanging up on me.

The Truth #1
So I get the Motorola tech support number and proceed to explain that my Verizon RAZR won't transfer files. The MOTOtech explains that this is not something Motorola supports because it doesn't exist on Verizon RAZR - Verizon has instructed Motorola to turn off OBEX.

Finally, the painful truth
Back to Verizon tech support. By now all I want is someone to come clean. We already have confirmation from both the Internet and from the phone manufacturer that this is a Verizon marketing scheme, so stop lying and tell me the truth.

This time over at Verizon phone support, the rep couldn't answer Bluetooth questions and requested that I talk to another tech support person (already on the line) who could help. Once again, the next sound you hear is that of Verizon hanging up.

Back to Verizon phone support. Finally, I was connected to someone who admitted that the OBEX is turned off and the only way I could transfer files was to use the Verizon service at $.25/each + airtime.

Shouldn't there be some law against blatant lies - if not through legislation at least on moral grounds? I'm sure that somewhere in the contractual language there's mention of OBEX not being available. But I'm stuck, I don't have another carrier. What's more, I'm a big boy - just tell me the truth, I can handle you being the greedy monolithic corporate telecom that you are.

I came across your blog because of the baby boomer reference (and am hooked on the read! me - born in 1963) ... then couldn't help but share in your verizon frustration.

I will pass your story along to other friends of mine (looking to get the RAZR) on Verizon. I have several who may be dissuaded!

Your experience of the Verizon brainlapse (a.k.a. lie) re: OBEX issue is more involved than my experience. I simply did NOT want music while callers were waiting for me to pick-up the line. I was called and offered unlimited text for a fee, etc... and was told that the music was BUNDLED with the text upgrade. I asked that the music just be taken off. I was told it was part of "the package" (aka bundled) and was told they could NOT turn the music off. Weighing my options - I agreed to the music. Oh yeah, I was told it was part of the text upgrade fee.

Got my bill - $4.99/mo. for default music, separate from the text upgrade. There is no such requirement or offer to have the music and text upgrade bundled. I spoke to a Verizon rep over the phone and went to a Verizon store to get the 'personal' interaction.

I now have the music turned off, unsuccessfully debated getting a credit, referenced the representative who called me to offer the 'bundled services', and was told they were sorry for the misinterpretation.

I later found out several other friends have had the same experience. $4.99/mo. ?! - I suppose when multiplied by 100,000 for even 1-month (e.g., the number of people that may find the added bill charge w/in a month), that's a decent some of money - to offset the money spent on tech support (ha!).

Your story sounds like good old fashioned "slamming" where if you reply with a "yes" to any question ie: "isn't it a beautiful day?" you find yourself transferred to a new supplier.

I've been reading more since I posted this today, boy are Verizon customers pissed about this OBEX disability!

There is a way to enable OBEX, and I have managed to do it. It is a rather extensive process, and there are two ways to do it. The first step for both of them is to locate the wiki on the subject. You go there and follow the instructions all the way up to the point where it tells you which firmware to use. If you want to stick with the verizon skin for your phone you download a copy of the .02 firmware and use that instead of the alltel firmware. Then it works just fine.

I just kinda stumbled upon your blog, and I'd like to share my frustrations with Verizon.

I have a Treo 650 and I encountered a similarly frustrating problem. If you get the "In" picture and text messaging and you have the cheap-o free phone, those messages are actually free. However, with the Treos, the picture messages are not free. You have to pay for the data usage! After I got my first bill, I was confused and I tried to call and straighten it out. They tried to sign me up for a $45/mo. data plan. When I declined, they basically said that's just how it works. If I don't pay for the upgrade, free really isn't free.

I found this thread while searching for how to bypass what Verizon has done. I too was caught by the Verizon deceipt on this matter. I changed to Verizon last summer and got a Razor because I read about all the features. Only after I had the phone for over 30 days and tried to download photos did I discover what Verizon had done. By then it was too late to cancel the service and I am stuck. I have stopped a lot of people from going with Verizon because of this. I can't believe their corporate could be so deceitful in their quest for revenue; but they are. I added a micro SD memory card and remove it to my PC to download photos. I'll NEVER use their service for anything but telephone. And yes, I will continue to spend idle time at the mall just outside the Verizon store urging potential customers to get all the facts about the missing OBEX before they sign up. You should do the same. Only when it hits their profit hard enough will they change.
