What the United States needs is a government that is run by sensible adults. I am amazed at the clarity that Republicans still use to speak of former President Clinton's White House problems. They were, no doubt, embarassing and unnecesaary but the man and his administration left the country with a balanced budget and at peace, and Republicans blame him for the Iraqi War and September 11, 2001.
I am wondering if Republicans can handle peace and fiscal responsibility. The War in Iraqi is costing the U.S. $185 million dollars a day. The federal budget deficit is so irrationally large that it is illogical to even try to talk about it. Health care and higher education are now a lifetime financial undertaking for any family - the equal of a home mortgage. Yet Republicans deflect, dodge, and deny the "bread and butter" issues that made America great and gave it the greatest standard of living in the world.
I believe that America needs the greatest military power it can achieve and maintain - the best in the world. The Republicans have to come to their senses and learn that the world has changed and the use of force will be less of option in foreign policy that it has in anytime in US history. Diplomacy and economic prowess will be the tools to building a stable world, economic prosperity at home, and dealing with adverseries abroad.
I remember in the 1970s thru the early 1990s my Republican friends used to start and end every political arguement with the moral dimension of the budget deficit. It was always how "immoral" it was to pass that debt on to our children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. My how times have changed. President Bush wants to reform Social Security before it goes broke in 2065 while in the here and now of 2006 he runs a half-a-trillion dollar deficits. With that kind of math we will all be broke and won't have to worry about Social Security in 2065. But after all, it is just another issue that deflects, dodges, and denys the current problems.
A word to the wise - Democrats listen up too!!!

I agree Danny "Health care and higher education are now a lifetime financial undertaking" We are now back in the Roman times where the fire department will put out your house if you sign over the mortgage only instead of a fire it is your health!! We are being held hostage and sold out! My wife retires soon and need certain medicines to keep from going blind. The cost of one prescription is $500 on one plan and $87 on the next and that is per month. The whole thing is totally confusing.
I retrained recently to teach science. The requirements for teaching are as tough as being a lawyer or a doctor (well almost a doctor) and the money is not there. The Federal Gov't wants professionals but do not want to pay for them. I will stop now because I could go on forever on the recent reforms in education. We obviously need reform since we have lead the world for the last 100 years with a system that did not work???

Where does it say that the Federal Gov't is responsible for paying for you to become a teacher. Why can't we be responsible for our own lives?
