Baby Boomers Turning 60

Blah, blah, blah..the first Boomers are turning sixty this year. What'd they think? We'd all die at 59? I defy you to find a news outlet that hasn't done a story on our pending senescence. But I did come across a list of the greats and near-greats who hit 60 this year, so any of you potentials codgers out there are in good company.

I'm not surprised that Dolly Parton is turning 60, but Patti Smith? How could the punk darling be sixty? On the other hand, there are some who seem to have been sixty years ago--like George W, who I have never wanted to claim as one of us anyway. And how about Pat Sajak and Donald Trump? "Youthful" isn't the first word that leaps to mind.

On the other hand, if some of these women are about to be sixty, then sixty must be the new 40---to paraphrase Gloria Steinem. Candice Bergen, Diane Keaton, Susan Sarandon, and Linda Rondstadt for starters. Is it really all in the bone structure? Or perhaps beauty is as beauty does. Some of our cohort look like they've been rode hard and put away wet. The years have been downright cruel to Liza Minelli for instance, and Darryl Hall (reinforcing my theory that pretty boys just don't hold up to time).

I don't care how old Jimmy Buffett or Cheech Marin are--I'd smoke a joint with them any day. And speaking of joint, our very first Boomer president, Bill Clinton, will celebrate 60 this year.

There is so much talk about the baby boomer generation, their numbers, their wealth, and the potential power within this group with such huge numbers. Well, if that be true, why don't we UNITE as a group to make some positive changes in this country? Nothing happens unless there is a uniting of enough people over a common cause that everyone wants to see changed.

Let's consider what subject might be entered into that everyone, especially us baby boomers, wants to see changed. Could it be the system we have for paying income taxes? Could it be how we as a country are handling illegal immigrants into our country, especially when they cannot even speak the English language fluently? Could it be illegal drugs? You name one that you would like to see changed...YOU name one. But I do know that income taxes are something we all hate to pay, and we all know how terribly inaccurate the system is with all of its millions of pages that we are supposed to know. What a joke! Even H&R Block was hit with a huge fine because they didn't even do their returns properly.

Well, the truth is that Congress has had the Fair Tax proposal introduced at least two times, and President Bush and his top advisor, Carl Rove, are well aware of this proposal. However, President Bush has stated that there needs to be a "grassroots" effort that has to come from the people in order to get the current system replaced. Well, what are we waiting for? And what better group of people in this country to unite and make this happen than the Baby Boomer generation. Remember one thing, and we should never forget it, that this is a government of the people, and by the people, and for the people. It is time for us, the people, to UNITE behind a cause that is needed to bring greatness back to this wonderful country we call the UNITED States of America. This will ONLY happen if we UNITE. Otherwise we will continue to be fleeced of our hard-earned income for the rest of time.

Now is OUR time. WE MUST UNITE if we are ever to bring about change. By the way, are you aware of the fact that the 16th amendment to our constitution, that says we must pay income taxes, was NEVER legally ratified? If you don't believe me, than call the Fair Tax people at 1-800-fair-tax and ask them. They know the facts, and it is in their information packet. These are very astute business people who have worked hard to put forth a new program that will benefit everyone, including individuals and businesses. And this new program would totally do away with the IRS...FOREVER!

Are any of you with me? I would welcome any and all comments. IT IS TIME...NOW...TO UNITE!

Just a comment on re-adjusting tax methods - the rich use a much smaller percentage of their income for living expenses - they reinvest most of it. So if you cut income taxes and raise sales taxes, you are essentially giving the rich a huge tax cut and throwing more onto the backs of the poor and the middle class.
