The Carlton College Voice has a thoughtful article on Baby Boomers dealing with aging parents, careers, retirement, and other more philosophical issues. It's well-researched and a good read.

I want to "Age in Place", in my own home, surrounded by my cherished belongings, and my friends for as long as I and they can live.

I've watched sweet seniors age poorly with an undignified end. Not for me.

Let's engage the architects to build, or change our current homes, to house ourselves, a few friends or like minded people, and the personal staff we need to age gracefully.

We'll need a CNA (Certified Nurse's Assistant) that we collectively choose. We'll need a driver to help us shop and go to doctors appointments. A driver that likes us, and makes us smile.

How about a good handyman? Really, how about a good handyman? Set us up with the high tech stuff we have difficulty with, make the shower safe, place handrails, hook up a medical alarm systems. Make us smile.

How about some pets to keep us company, give us love, and keep us active?

Maybe a visit once a month by a psychologist who is in tune with our ever changing needs...who understands the frustration, anger, and helplessness our medical conditions bring.

How about we control our destinies?

To "Age in Place" takes planning, and experimenting.

Don't wait till you can't help yourself before you give aging in place some thought.

"a daughter's story by mary shafer" written in "The Carlton College Voice" post is a poignant story, and all too common a tale. Mary's beautiful story of her mom's journey to the end pulled my heart strings.

Don't let Mary's story be the same as your final tale. Plan ahead...this is the life we have, let's make the end as fun as it can be.

Nursing homes are a one way trip to be avoided at all costs.
